River Swim Guidelines
River Swimming Guidelines
Pre-Swim Briefing:
Please listen carefully to the detailed briefing given to all participants about swimming in Horstead Mill pond. It will highlight the safe steps to allow for a shallow entry, the location and direction of the mill race swosh, and the rocky riverbed.
Please consider wearing protective footwear such as swimming socks or water shoes to prevent injuries from any possible sharp stones.
Safety Measures:
There will be a qualified outdoor swimming coach supervising the activity at all times.
There will be a first-aid kit on the shore line.
Clear boundaries for a safe swimming area (especially near the mill race) will be recommended to you.
Entry and Exit:
Only use the recommended steps for easy entry and exit from the water.
It is advised to enter the water slowly to acclimate to the temperature and feel the riverbed underfoot.
Swimming Guidelines:
Know your level of risk and do not exceed it. If you are a less confident swimmer please stay in the shallow areas where you can stand and wade.
Confident swimmers should stay on the right of the mill race to avoid strong currents.
Understand that the mill race will carry swimmers back to the shallow area. If you choose to swim close to it just relax, float and let yourself be carried out to the shallower water depths.
Awareness and Communication:
Please communicate with the other swimmers, check in on each other.
If you feel uncomfortable or need assistance speak up and get the attention of the supervising swimmer.
Remain alert to the use of a whistle or shouting to communicate any urgent instructions or a call to swimmers to return back to shore for some urgent unforeseen reason.
Environmental Considerations:
Respect the natural environment and avoid disturbing wildlife or vegetation.
Ensure that any litter is collected and disposed of properly and all your personal belongings are brought back to Harriet's House with you.
Have a safe and enjoyable swim!
