Harriet’s House Sauna Rules & Guidelines

  1. Please be aware that the composite decking will be slightly slippery when wet after it has rained or the showers have been in use.

  2. Please shower before using the sauna and remove any creams or lotions that you may otherwise sweat off.

  3. Remove all jewellery, glasses, contact lenses, watches and other metal piercings that will get hot.

  4. Please wear a swim suit and check it does not have any metal buckles or tags that will get hot.

  5. The recommended time to stay in the sauna is up to fifteen minutes at any one time for people who are used to regular sauna use.  For beginners a maximum of five to ten minutes is recommended. Cooling off by using the cold showers, resting inbetween stints and drinking water to stay hydrated are all important activities to enhance your sauna experience.

  6. The use of a sauna hat is recommended to protect your hair from the heat.  The hat also helps regulate your body temperature and curiously keeps you cooler than without one.

  7. Be aware of the signs of overheating and dehydration: dizziness, headache, feeling sick, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing.  It is important to exit the sauna if you experience any of these symptoms.

  8. Please sit on your own individual towel.  The upper deck is hotter than the lower deck and please avoid sitting directly opposite the stove.

  9. Before exiting the sauna it is important to transition to the lower deck if you are seated on the upper deck and then stand up slowly BEFORE attempting to walk to the door and open it.  This ensures that you can deal with any light headedness that you may experience without risk of fainting or falling or accidently knocking into anyone or the stove.

  10. If you wish to add water to the hot coals to produce steam please ask the other guests who are in the sauna with you first to make sure you have their permission.  Use the long handled ladle to pour the water over the coal taking great care not to hold your hand or arm over the coal directly.  This will avoid the risk of getting scalded by the steam.

  11. When you have finished your time in the sauna please exit, with your towel.  It is recommended you spend fifteen minutes getting changed and cooling down before leaving the site eg. driving home to help reaclimatise your body.

  12. Harriet's House operates a strictly no smoking or vaping policy

  13. No books, electronic devices (including airpods, kindles, tablets, phones etc) or magazines & newspapers are taken in to the sauna.
